Kenya announces second Ebola death, says ‘no evidence’ of community spread

What the report says
Kenya has reported its second Ebola death as the outbreak linked to the Democratic Republic of the Congo spreads across parts of Africa, according to Al Jazeera’s report on Friday. The Kenyan Ministry of Health said the latest fatality was a 65-year-old woman who developed symptoms while in quarantine and was a close relative of a Kenyan man who died of Ebola earlier this month.
The ministry said Kenya now has seven Ebola patients being treated in two isolation facilities. Officials described all known cases as part of a single cluster and said there was no evidence of community transmission. The first confirmed Kenyan case was identified this month in a man who had travelled from the DRC to Nairobi, where he later died in hospital on October 5. Authorities have traced 135 contacts and placed them in quarantine.
Al Jazeera also reported that the current outbreak has reached four countries across eastern, central and western Africa, making it the widest geographic spread of Ebola on the continent so far. The DRC, which declared its 17th outbreak in May, has reported more than 9,000 cases and over 4,600 deaths, while Nigeria recently confirmed its first case. Uganda has also tightened transit rules for travelers with recent DRC exposure. The broader situation matters because health officials are trying to contain cross-border spread before it develops into wider community transmission.
