Kenya: 'Burden and Loss' Builds in DR Congo, As Kenya Strengthens Ebola Containment

What the report says
UN agencies said on Friday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is still expanding and needs continued funding, food support and health resources to avoid a resurgence. The report, carried by UN News and distributed by AllAfrica, said the outbreak was declared in mid-May and has since spread from the eastern part of the country to eight provinces, including Nord-Ubangi in the northwest. Officials cited thousands of cases and deaths, along with tens of thousands of contacts being monitored each day.
WHO incident manager Catherine Smallwood said the outbreak is unfolding in a difficult environment shaped by conflict, displacement and remote terrain that can be hard to reach by road or air. She said many families are facing both illness and loss of income, while the World Food Programme is helping provide food and supporting the construction of Ebola treatment centres. The article also noted that some people are still dying outside recognised treatment facilities, which health officials view as a sign that cases are not always being detected early enough.
The piece said treatment capacity has improved, with more than 2,000 beds available toward a target of 3,000, and that about 2,600 people in the DRC have survived Ebola. It also described clinics offering monitoring and psychosocial support for patients and survivors.
In Kenya, the report said more than 100 contacts linked to the country’s first Ebola case and fatality earlier this month were identified, and some were due to finish a 21-day quarantine soon. WHO’s Kenya representative urged continued preparedness and cautioned against stigma, saying contact tracing and quarantine had helped prevent wider community spread.
