What the report says

Technical problems at a small number of US polling places have caused delays during the midterm elections, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting. The issues described by officials were largely framed as minor, but in some places they affected how long polls stayed open or how ballots were processed.

In Westchester County, New York, north of New York City, officials said ballot-reading machines had trouble because the paper ballots were too thick for the scanners. Al Jazeera reported that election workers collected those ballots for later manual counting, with county officials saying the ballots would be taken to the Board of Elections under police escort and counted in the presence of attorneys and representatives from different parties.

Elsewhere, Al Jazeera said voting was delayed for about 20 minutes in Broward County, Florida, after a new safety feature malfunctioned. In North Carolina, election officials were considering extending voting by an hour in seven counties after widespread technical problems were reported. In Arizona’s Maricopa County, a polling place at a school was briefly closed after a power outage, and several counties in Pennsylvania extended voting by half an hour because of machine setup issues.

The reported disruptions matter because even short delays can affect access and confidence in election administration, especially in closely watched contests. Al Jazeera noted that officials in affected areas were trying to reassure voters that ballots would still be counted.
