'This is a disaster': Angry Republicans blame Trump for midterms defeat

What the report says
BBC World News reports that anger is growing inside the Republican Party after Democrats scored a series of unexpected midterm victories in several reliably conservative states. In interviews with party operatives, lobbyists and campaign officials, some Republicans blamed President Donald Trump for the losses, saying his attention to his own agenda and lack of focus on voter concerns hurt the party’s chances.
According to the BBC, critics argued that Trump’s low approval ratings, emphasis on major projects in Washington and support for unpopular policies created a political drag for Republican candidates. Others pointed to wider issues, including voter dissatisfaction over tariffs, immigration enforcement and the administration’s handling of foreign policy. Trump allies, however, disputed that he should be held responsible, arguing that midterm elections often punish the party in power and that some Republican candidates ran weak campaigns.
The defeats appeared to leave Democrats in control of Congress and create a more difficult legislative environment for Trump’s second term. The BBC notes that the results could give Democrats leverage to investigate the administration, block judicial nominees and slow parts of the president’s agenda. The report also says the outcome may intensify debate within the GOP over its direction and future beyond Trump.
