Planned handover of a surgical theatre constructed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade at Nambieso Health Centre III has stalled due to delays in equipping the facility, despite the project being completed 15 months ago.
In August 2024, the UPDF Engineering Brigade was contracted to construct the facility within eight months, but the project was delayed by five months and was eventually completed last year.
Eng. Mulwana Kizito, who is in charge of UPDF Engineering Brigade projects in northern Uganda, said the project was completed last year and the district was expected to coordinate with the Ministry of Health to equip the facility before its handover and commissioning.
Dr. David Okino, the Kwania District Health Officer (DHO), said the district had informed the UPDF that the work was complete, but the remaining challenge was acquiring the necessary equipment, from the Ministry of Health.
He said they have already written to the ministry to request for the equipment and are waiting for a feedback.
George Kakoma Akacha, the Kwania District LC5 Chairperson, said the project was a positive development and, once opened, would support the wider health system, including Aduku Health Centre IV, by improving access to surgical services, maternity care, and treatment for other conditions.
Ainebyona Emmanuel, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, said the ministry would engage with the ministry’s infrastructure department concerning the project and provide further updates.
