What the report says

South Africans were scheduled to go to polling stations nationwide to vote in the 2026 local government elections, according to SAnews.gov.za, as carried by AllAfrica. The contest will determine who serves on municipal councils and helps shape everyday local services, including water, electricity, sanitation, roads, waste management and community development.

The article said 29.2 million registered voters were eligible to take part, with voting taking place at 23,696 stations across the country’s nine provinces. The Electoral Commission of South Africa said it had deployed about 188,000 officials and had logistical, security and operational arrangements in place to manage the poll. Voting was set to run from 07:00 to 21:00, and Wednesday was declared a public holiday to make participation easier.

A total of 136,790 candidates were contesting 10,526 council seats across eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 205 local municipalities. Voters were reminded to vote only at their registered station and to bring acceptable identification, such as a smart ID card, green barcoded ID book or temporary identity certificate.

The article also noted that special voting had been held on 2 and 3 November for people unable to vote on election day or unable to travel, with 1,425,942 special votes cast. Government said the process had gone well and urged young people in particular to participate, framing the election as an important test of local democracy.
