What the report says

Makerere University is reviewing its security and event-management arrangements after a video of a woman undressing at the annual Freshers’ Ball spread widely on social media and triggered public backlash. According to Nile Post, the university said the incident has raised concerns about conduct and safety at campus events and prompted calls for people to stop sharing the footage.

The university said in a Tuesday statement that the woman was a former student, not one of the newly admitted freshmen attending the event. Nile Post reported that the incident happened on Saturday, October 31, at the university grounds, where she reportedly climbed onto a table and stripped in front of a cheering crowd. The footage then circulated online, drawing criticism and debate about behavior at university gatherings.

Makerere said it does not condone conduct that goes against the values and standards expected of its community. It also said it is conducting an immediate and comprehensive assessment of security and event arrangements for university-sanctioned social events in an effort to prevent similar occurrences. The university further acknowledged a request from the woman’s family asking the public to stop reposting the explicit material.

The Freshers’ Ball is traditionally meant to welcome new students, but Makerere noted that it is also attended by alumni and members of the public. The incident has added to wider concerns about crowd control and event oversight at large campus functions, alongside reports of a separate confrontation involving musician Fik Fameica and student leaders at the same event.
