What the report says

Africa Check, republished by AllAfrica, says a circulating image purporting to show Kenyan President William Ruto looking at a photo of an attack on former prime minister Raila Odinga’s car has been altered and should not be shared as authentic. The fact-check was published on 14 October 2026 and focuses on an image that spread online shortly after Ruto attended a memorial-related event for Odinga.

According to the report, Ruto presided over the unveiling of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya county, on 7 October 2026, an event meant to honor Odinga’s role in Kenyan politics. The viral image appeared to show Ruto and Odinga’s widow, Ida Betty Odinga, examining a picture in the mausoleum wall display that supposedly depicted security officers tear-gassing one of Odinga’s vehicles. Africa Check said that claim does not match the original image.

Using reverse image searches and a closer look at the source material, the organization said it found a different version of the photo in which Ruto and Ida Odinga were viewing images of Odinga and his family at the mausoleum. Africa Check also located the original photo on Ruto’s verified Facebook page, which showed him looking at a picture of Odinga holding his chest, not the car-attack scene shown in the manipulated version.

The report provides context for Odinga’s recent political history, noting that he served as Kenya’s prime minister from 2008 to 2013, later reconciled with Ruto in March 2025, and died in October 2025. The main takeaway is that the image circulating online was digitally altered and should be treated as misinformation.
