Hundreds of thousands of workers on strike across Republic of Ireland

What the report says
More than 300,000 public sector workers are taking strike action across the Republic of Ireland, according to BBC News, in the latest escalation of a dispute over pay and conditions with the government. The walkout includes nurses, doctors, teachers and civil servants, and is set to last 24 hours. A further strike is already planned for 21 October.
BBC reported that the action is expected to disrupt schools and hospitals, with possible closures, cancelled appointments and picket lines across the country. The strike follows earlier industrial steps, including work-to-rule measures begun by more than 100,000 workers at the end of September and by primary and secondary school teachers at the start of October. The report said almost 97% of Fórsa members backed action in an industrial ballot.
Union representatives said workers had been left with no option after the government did not establish a basis for formal talks. Brendan O'Brien of SIPTU said staff goodwill had helped keep public services functioning, while Jack Chambers, the Republic’s minister for expenditure, called the strike deeply disappointing and warned of wider economic disruption. Teachers quoted by RTÉ said pay was not keeping pace with living costs, with some describing difficulties affording housing in Ireland.
The dispute matters because it involves essential public services and could affect daily life for patients, families and school pupils nationwide. As a general background point, public sector pay disputes in Ireland are often resolved through negotiation and industrial action can put pressure on both unions and the government to reach a settlement.
