Zimbabwe: Police Officers Lose Bid to Escape Detention After Assaulting Suspect, Demanding U.S.$370 Bribe

Two Zimbabwe police officers have failed in a High Court attempt to halt a 14-day detention sentence after being convicted in disciplinary proceedings over the assault of a theft suspect and a bribery demand. The case involved Sergeant Talent Lazarus Tausen of ZRP Chipinge Urban and Constable Edwin Dewa of Nyabadza Police Station, according to the New Zimbabwe report distributed by AllAfrica.

The disciplinary matter stemmed from events at Chisumbanje Police Station between November 8 and 13, 2025. The officers were accused of badly assaulting Sydney Muchongoyo after he got off an Inter Africa bus with a bag said to belong to someone else, and of seeking money from his mother, Alice Chikumba, in exchange for his release. The report says Chikumba paid US$370 but later wanted the money returned when her son was not freed.

After the officers were convicted and their appeal to the Commissioner General of Police was dismissed, they went to the Mutare High Court seeking a stay of execution while they pursued review proceedings. Justice Sijabuliso Siziba rejected the bid, finding the review application was defective and filed outside the required time limit. The court also said the complaints raised were the kind usually dealt with on appeal, not review. The ruling clears the way for the detention sentence to be enforced and underscores the procedural limits on challenging disciplinary decisions in Zimbabwe's legal system.
