What the report says

Uganda says it has made notable progress in reducing HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, according to a report distributed by AllAfrica from Nile Post. The story says the gains are being credited to coordinated efforts by the Uganda AIDS Commission and the Ministry of Health, including expanded testing, treatment, community outreach, behaviour-change campaigns and other prevention measures.

The article cites national estimates showing about 1.567 million people living with HIV in Uganda. It says new infections fell 64% from 2010 levels to 34,000 in 2025, while AIDS-related deaths declined 66% to 19,000 over the same period. Officials also pointed to wider testing access, with about 8.5 million tests conducted in the financial year ending June 2026, alongside community-based testing and HIV self-testing.

Prevention efforts now include condoms, voluntary medical male circumcision, tailored programmes for higher-risk groups and expanded access to pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. The report says Uganda began rolling out Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable prevention drug, in April 2026 and plans to expand availability. More than 230,000 people used PrEP in the last financial year, up from 170,000 the year before.

Despite the progress, the article says young people and women remain heavily affected, and mother-to-child transmission is still a concern. Officials also stressed that treatment retention and viral suppression remain important to sustaining the decline in new infections.
