Oil spill washes up on UAE beaches after tanker strike

What the report says
An oil spill linked to a tanker attack near the Strait of Hormuz is spreading along the United Arab Emirates’ northern coast, according to BBC World News reporting based on satellite imagery, verified video and statements from UAE authorities. The spill has forced the closure of some beaches and coastal areas, with impacts reported near Umm Al Quwain. Satellite images reviewed by BBC Verify show the slick extending more than 35 km from the vessel by Wednesday.
The ship was identified by BBC Verify analysis as Gem No.2, a crude oil tanker that was damaged in an incident on 9 October. Maritime intelligence sources said the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile, triggering a fire that was later extinguished. The tanker was carrying 22 Indian crew members, all of whom were rescued, according to the Indian consulate in Dubai.
UAE authorities said they began containment efforts to limit environmental harm. Experts quoted in the report said it is too early to know the full scale of the damage, but warned that oil spills can harm marine life immediately and may cause longer-term ecological effects. The slick is moving toward Siniyah and Khor Al Beidah islands, which BBC Verify described as an important biodiversity area with coral, seagrass and saltmarsh habitats, and species including turtles and the critically endangered Halavi guitarfish.
The incident comes amid a period of heightened tensions and repeated vessel attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route. BBC World News notes that the event adds to concerns about both marine pollution and the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
