What the report says

Nigeria’s federal government has announced a new package of education reforms aimed at improving school infrastructure, teacher quality, digital learning and skills development. The announcement was made in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the opening of the 85th Joint Consultative Committee on Education plenary meeting, according to AllAfrica’s report from This Day.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa, represented at the event by senior ministry official Folake Olatunji-Davies, said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is pushing targeted measures to make the sector more responsive to national development needs. He pointed to the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative as a coordinating framework for reforms, with emphasis on quality assurance, technical and vocational education, STEM, digitalisation, inclusion and better learning environments.

The report said the government also highlighted specific programmes such as the Renewed Hope Energising Education Programme, hostel projects at institutions including Yaba College of Technology and Lagos State University, and efforts to upgrade medical, engineering and technology facilities in tertiary institutions. It also described the National Digital Learning Initiative as part of a broader rollout of smart classrooms and digital resources. In addition, officials said the government is working to reduce the number of out-of-school children through enrolment drives and partnerships with states and development groups.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, speaking through his education commissioner, backed the focus on school buildings, teacher training and welfare. The meeting matters because the federal government is using it to promote a nationwide education reset, while also signaling that success will depend on coordination with states, local communities, development partners and the private sector.
