Namugga, Byuuma Election Battle Returns to Court September 28

The Masaka High Court has adjourned to September 28 the election petition challenging the victory of NRM politician Dez Byuuma Oswaldo as Mawogola South County Member of Parliament. The case was brought by former contestant Gorreth Namugga, who is disputing the declaration of Byuuma as the winner of the parliamentary race.

According to Nile Post, the hearing was delayed after Byuuma’s legal team, led by Geoffrey Kandeebe, asked for more time to review documents submitted by Namugga in support of her petition. The dispute is before Justice Ochaya at the Masaka High Court.

Namugga has alleged that the election was affected by violence and other irregularities that disrupted voting in some areas, including claims that ballot boxes were taken and that counting did not properly take place in parts of the constituency. She said she came to court to seek legal redress and asked judges to consider the case fairly.

Byuuma rejected the accusations and said the adjournment was a normal procedural step, not a setback. He expressed confidence in his lawyers and in the final outcome. Election petitions in Uganda commonly test claims of irregularities, vote management and compliance with electoral law, and such cases can affect both the legitimacy of the result and public confidence in the process.
