Nameere Vows to Fight Loan Sharks, Push for Affordable Credit in Masaka

What the report says
Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere has said she will push for cheaper credit for residents and traders, while also seeking more government support for parish-level poverty reduction programmes. According to Nile Post, she framed the effort as part of her response to concerns in the city about high-interest lending, debt pressure and the risk of borrowers losing property.
Nameere made the remarks in Nyendo after the High Court in Masaka dismissed an election petition filed by her rival, Rose Nalubowa. The court found that there were irregularities in a vote recount, but said they were not shown to have changed the outcome. The judge also ordered Nalubowa to pay the costs of the petition. Nameere said the legal dispute had distracted her from public duties, but that she was now focused on service delivery.
She said she would engage financial institutions and other stakeholders to explore lower-interest lending options, particularly for small traders, entrepreneurs and low-income households. She also said market improvements, education needs and the welfare of street-based workers should be treated as priorities in Masaka City.
Beyond local lending issues, Nameere said she would lobby for increased funding under the Parish Development Model, a government programme that channels revolving funds through parish savings and credit groups. She urged political opponents to work together after the election period and said leaders should cooperate on practical issues affecting residents.
