India summons Pakistani diplomat after incident in Arabian Sea

India has summoned Pakistan’s top diplomat in New Delhi after a collision involving vessels from the two countries’ navies in the Arabian Sea, according to Al Jazeera’s report on Wednesday. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the Pakistani naval ship struck an Indian warship in international waters the previous day and described the conduct as unprofessional.

The ministry said it lodged a formal protest with Pakistan’s charge d’Affaires and also instructed India’s envoy in Islamabad to raise the matter with Pakistan’s foreign ministry. India said the incident breached a 1991 bilateral understanding that calls for naval ships and submarines from both sides to remain at least three nautical miles apart in international waters. The ministry asked Pakistan to ensure its military units follow the agreement to avoid a repeat.

Pakistan had not publicly responded at the time of the report. Al Jazeera noted that this is the first direct military friction between the nuclear-armed neighbours since a four-day conflict last year. The two countries have lacked ambassadors in each other’s capitals since 2019, when ties were downgraded after India removed the special status of Indian-administered Kashmir. The broader backdrop remains a long-running rivalry shaped by repeated disputes and three wars since 1947.
