IG Arrests Oyam District Staff Over Alleged Corruption

What the report says
The Inspectorate of Government has arrested Ms. Ejang Florence, an office typist at Oyam District Local Government, over allegations that she solicited and received money in exchange for helping people secure public service jobs. According to Watchdog Uganda, the case is tied to recruitment at the district level and involves alleged payments linked to appointments in the education sector.
The charge sheet cited in the report says she is accused of asking for Shs17.6 million from six people between April and June 2025 as an inducement to help them obtain posts as Education Assistant II officers at Oyam District Local Government. She is also alleged to have received Shs508,000 on her mobile phone as payment to facilitate the recruitment of one applicant.
Ms. Ejang is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court on October 30, 2026. The Inspectorate said the arrest is part of its wider effort to fight corruption and promote integrity, transparency and accountability in the public sector.
Watchdog Uganda said the investigation was handled by the IG’s Lira Regional Office, led by Principal Inspectorate Officer Alfred Atulinde. The case adds to ongoing scrutiny of recruitment practices in local government, where job access can be vulnerable to bribery and influence, though any findings will depend on the court process.
