FCC Democrat warns broadcasters to resist Trump’s media pressure tactics

What the report says
Anna Gomez, the lone Democratic commissioner at the US Federal Communications Commission, urged the National Association of Broadcasters to strengthen its response to what she described as pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration on major news networks and local broadcast stations. In a letter sent Thursday and reported by Al Jazeera, Gomez said broadcasters are facing a level of scrutiny that has not been matched by the industry’s public pushback.
Her warning followed remarks from FCC chair Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, who suggested that stations airing what he called “entirely fake polls” could be violating their regulatory obligations ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Carr also advised broadcasters to avoid “news distortions” and “broadcast hoaxes.” Al Jazeera said it asked the FCC for clarification on which polls or outlets Carr was referring to, but the agency did not answer.
Gomez argued that the FCC does not have broad authority to police unfavorable polling or routine journalism. She said the legal standard for a news-distortion case is high and generally involves knowingly false reporting that causes immediate harm. In her view, airing polling results that the administration dislikes does not meet that threshold.
The dispute comes as Democrats and press-freedom advocates warn that the Trump administration is using federal power to pressure media organizations. Al Jazeera noted that the issue is especially sensitive because the midterms could shift control of Congress.
